Aug 9, 2014 7:23 PM

Patrick Peterson and the Arizona Cardinals have agreed upon a five-year contract extension worth as much as $70 million.

The deal contains $48 million in guaranteed money and makes Peterson the NFL's highest paid cornerback.

The deal will surpass extensions signed recently by the Cleveland Browns' Joe Haden (five years, $68 million) and Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman (four years, $56 million).

Peterson, who was selected fifth overall in 2011, became the first member of that highly successful first-round class to sign an extension.

Sep 22, 2014 3:03 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have made a new contract offer to Jim Harbaugh, but he has yet to respond.

"I signed my 10th contract in the National Football League in 2011, so I understand contracts. I understand how contracts work, and what they are there for," Harbaugh said. "I also know that I work at the pleasure of the San Francisco 49ers organization and at the pleasure of the York Family. And I am paid extremely well -- which I am most grateful for, and I am very proud to be part of this organization."

Harbaugh reiterated that he's "never asked to be the highest-paid coach in football" or "like a Super Bowl-winning coach," while emphasizing that he's never demanded "more power."

Lions Won't Discuss New Contract With Ndamukong Suh Until After Season

Jul 29, 2014 12:27 PM

The Detroit Lions have tabled contract discussions with Ndamukong Suh until after the 2014 season.

Suh is entering the final season of his initial five-year rookie contract.

"I think it's the right thing for us to do," Lions president Tom Lewand said Monday. "It's the right thing for the team. It's the right thing for everybody involved and it allows us to keep the focus where it belongs.

"I remain tremendously confident and Jim [Caldwell] said it [Sunday] in his press conference, we have a high degree of confidence that we can work out something that will be mutually satisfactory at the right time and the goal hasn't changed in the least."

That goal for Detroit is to sign Suh, who will have a cap number of $22.4 million this season, to a long-term contract after the season.

Colts Cut Chris Rainey For Violating Team Rules

Sep 30, 2014 11:34 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have cut Chris Rainey for violating team rules.

Rainey was expected to receive a big opportunity with the Colts following the ACL injury to Vick Ballard.

“I can do anything and everything," Rainey said over the weekend, via PFT. "Wherever they put me, I'm ready for it. I'm one of them play-making guys that make you miss. It just makes you smile because you know what you can do in the middle of the field. So just be ready for it when your time comes.”

As a rookie, he contributed out of the backfield and as a returner, but he was waived hours after a Jan. 2013 arrest on a simple battery charge.

Rainey had been previously arrested in 2010, while at the University of Florida, on a felony stalking charge, which was later reduced to a misdemeanor. And in Dec. 2012, a month before the Steelers cut him, Rainey was cited for defiant trespass when he entered the Meadows Racetrack and Casino near Pittsburgh, after he had signed himself onto a self-exclusion list.

Colbert Expects Roethlisberger To Retire With Steelers

Aug 10, 2014 8:23 AM

Kevin Colbert expects Ben Roethlisberger to end his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Colbert said Monday he couldn't see “any circumstance that Ben won't end his career here (in Pittsburgh)."

Roethlisberger is making $12.1 million this season with a salary cap hit of $18.895 million but is the sixth-highest quarterback in base salary.

"Playing this year at my current salary, it's kind of taking a hometown discount,” Roethlisberger told the Tribune-Review. “I've played seven years on my current contract, which is the most of any (NFL) player or any quarterback. ... It is kind of taking a discount compared to maybe where it could be compared to other quarterbacks."
